We’ve discussed the benefits of biophilic design in this blog previously. Surrounding yourself with plants is not just a way to improve your mental wellbeing, it can also help remove various nasties from the air around you, resulting in improved air quality and better health.
Here are our top five houseplants for improved air quality and wellbeing:
Spider plants remove harmful chemicals including formaldehyde and benzene from the air. They are also very easy to grow.
As well as being attractive, Peace Lilies are one of the best plants for cleaning the air, as discovered by a NASA research study. They are toxic if eaten though, so keep away from pets and children.
Areca Palms are non-toxic and another good remover of air pollutants. They can be sensitive to draughts and cold temperatures so require a bit of tlc.
The Snake Plant, or ‘Mother-in-law’s Tongue’ as it’s commonly known, is fantastic if you’re not so green-fingered as it’s virtually indestructible. Just keep it somewhere warm and away from draughts.
If you prefer your plants to be more colourful, Gerberas are another great air purifier, particularly at removing benzene, commonly found in solvents, paints and exhaust fumes.
